The Concordia women’s soccer team tied the Briar Cliff University Chargers in a scoreless game Wednesday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa.
This is the women team’s fourth scoreless game of the season and the only scoreless tie. The team still sits in the first spot in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings alongside Hastings College, who the Bulldogs tied with on Saturday. Conference play ends on Oct. 25 with a game against Doane University.
The first half went scoreless as the two teams vied for ground against each other. Sophomore Kierstynn Garner had the best scoring opportunity in the 22’ where she took a clean shot on goal that was caught by Briar Cliff’s goalie.
The Bulldogs could not cut through the Chargers’ defense in the second half as they were rebuffed time and time again. Sophomore Savannah Andrews had another close scoring opportunity that was taken away by the goalie with a header off a kick from fellow sophomore Sierra Springer.
Concordia outshot Briar Cliff 7-3, with Garner leading the team in shots with three. Garner, the GPAC goal leader, has 15 goals on the season and is ranked eighth in goal scoring for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. She is also within nine goals of the single season goal record set by Jennifer Davis in 2005 with 24 goals.
Concordia also had more corner kicks for the game with 11 compared to one for the Chargers. Senior goalie Bradi Ore recorded three saves for the night.
The women now have a 10-3-3 overall record and a 6-1-3 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. They play next against newly added GPAC school Waldorf University on Oct. 21 at 4:30. The game is also senior day, where the team’s graduating members will be recognized for their efforts.
