The Concordia Bulldog women’s basketball team was defeated by the No. 24 Hastings Broncos, 84-49 on Feb. 12. The lopsided score was largely thanks to poor shooting in all areas from the Bulldogs, contrasted by impressive all-round Bronco shooting.
Concordia shot just 27 percent from field-goal range, 20.6 percent from behind the arc, and 50 percent from free throws. This is well below their season averages of 42.9 percent, 32.8 percent and 70.1 percent. The Bulldog shooting was also only inhibited by three Bronco blocks. They also got decent chances and had three more total shots than the Broncos. The 49-point total diverges from their average of 75.8 points per game.
Hastings, on the other hand, shot 43.7 percent from the field, 41.2 percent from three, and 68.2 percent from the foul line.
The Bulldogs kept things competitive for much of the early stages of the game. Concordia finished the first quarter down just one but began to let things slip midway through the second and went into halftime down 11 points.
Things didn’t get any better for the Bulldogs after the intermission. Coach Drew Olson’s team went down a further 12 points, 53-30, entering the final period of play. Concordia finished the game with a deficit of 35 points, which is more than double their previous biggest loss, a 73-56 loss to Briar Cliff on Jan. 11.
Junior Megan Belt led the Bulldogs in scoring with nine, junior Kristin Vieselmeyer led with 12 rebounds and senior Kendal Brigham had a team-high four assists.
The 13-12 Bulldogs will look to correct course on Feb. 15 as they take on Dakota Wesleyan at Friedrich Arena. The senior day event will tip off at 2 p.m.
