The No. 5 Concordia women’s basketball team were upset 70-56 by the Morningside University Mustangs in Sioux City, Iowa Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs and Mustangs tie in the regular season with a win over each other. Concordia beat Morningside earlier in mid-November to start off the Great Plains Athletic Conference season.
The teams ended the first quarter tied with 19 apiece. Concordia took an early lead, but Morningside came back midway through to tie the game up. This was the only lead the Bulldogs had in the entire game with the largest difference being six points with 6:20 left in the first.
The Mustangs took off in the second quarter, making 23 points compared to the Bulldogs’ 10. Morningside went off on a 12-0 run early to put Concordia in a rough spot with a score of 42-29 coming into halftime.
Concordia rallied somewhat in the third quarter scoring 17 points against Morningside’s 19, but the lead was so oppressive that the increased output did not put a dent in the deficit. The Mustangs took their largest lead of the game in this quarter with a 20-point difference late in the quarter. They then went into the final quarter with a 15-point lead of 61-46.
The fourth quarter was low scoring for both teams with Concordia making 10 and Morningside nine. Neither team was able to get a shot off until a little over four minutes into the quarter. However, the Mustangs did not need much offensive effort to keep ahead of the struggling Bulldogs by this point.
The Bulldogs had several shooting issues throughout the game. The team as a whole shot an abysmal 38 percent going 19-50 in field goals. Their three-point rate was not much better going six for 20 rounding out to 30 percent. On the other hand, Concordia made all 12 of its free throws.
Morningside lost the turnover game 22-17 but more than made up for it with rebounds going 34-23. This led to a massive 17-4 differential in second chance points and going 12-4 in fast break points.
Senior Abby Krieser was the only player to scratch double digits with 10 points. Sophomore Raelyn Kelty was the team leader in assists and rebounds with four each. Graduate Student Kendal Brigham was unusually impotent going 1-7 in field goals and 0-4 from three. She hit two free throws to give her four total points.
The team moves to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the GPAC. Their next game is against another ranked opponent No. 12 Briar Cliff University on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in Friedrich Arena.
