Hi, everyone! I’m Nora Betts, managing editor of The Sower!
I am a junior this year double-majoring in Journalism & Public Relations and English. I am also in the Pre-Deaconess program and Luke Scholars program.
I am so excited to be the managing editor of The Sower because this campus community is closer to my heart than anything. I am working to make The Sower not just something I love but something you all love, too.
Read about the survey I conducted and how we are making The Sower better here.
When people ask me why I chose to pursue journalism, my answer is simple: I love writing and I love telling people things. My love of writing is self-explanatory. English and literature were my favorite subjects in elementary and high school, and I would much rather write a paper than do a project or lab.
But the fact that I love telling people things needs some explanation. Whether it’s something cool I just learned in class, something crazy I just heard, or something hilarious that just happened, my instinct is to tell people. I suppose this love is what makes me send my friends a billion Instagram posts, or call my parents whenever anything interesting happens, or bother my roommate when she’s trying to study.
This habit of telling people things lends itself very well to journalism. Being a journalist is about telling people things with accuracy, objectivity, and fairness. However, journalism is more than just writing down facts. It’s understanding that every event affects people and that every article is written for people. Journalists have a unique calling to connect with people, listen to their stories, and share meaningful information with the community.
This summer, I had an internship with a city newspaper back home in Pennsylvania. I interviewed everyone from business owners and nonprofit workers to pickleball players. I heard their stories, comments, and opinions, and shared them with a community of thousands of people. That experience was deeply fulfilling.
I want The Sower to do the same thing here, to connect with all of you whether you’re quoted in an article or reading it.
As the school year starts, I pray you have a memorable, fun-filled, enriching, and rewarding time at Concordia, and I hope that The Sower can find a place in your college experience.
