Student Senate Hosts Field Access Forum
by Taylor Roby
Students, coaches, faculty members and administrators gathered in TLEC Auditorium on Feb. 12 to discuss access to Bulldog Stadium. There was open discussion between students and a panel of administrators.
“I thought it was a great opportunity for the student body and administration to bring their ideas together,” student body president Dakota Judds said. “This allowed the student body to voice their concerns and future ideas for possible solutions moving forward. I thought it went well. It’s beneficial to start an open discussion which could lead to future changes.”
The panel of administrators included President Rev. Dr. Brian Friedrich, Executive Vice President Dave Kumm, Director of Athletics Devin Smith, Associate Director of Athletics Angela Muller and Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics Gene Brooks.
Muller, Smith, and Kumm addressed their concerns for facilities and the reasoning behind the designated open recreational hours of 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. They expressed gratitude for all that Concordia has been blessed with while also addressing the responsibility to utilize and care for these blessings.
The panel also discussed how these limited hours protect Concordia Athletic Facilities from the financial impact of overuse, safety issues and potential damages to the field. Panelists also shared the long-term strategic master plan and explained that they are looking into the future to protect the assets that Concordia has invested so that generations of future Bulldogs will be able to enjoy the facilities for years to come
Time was allotted for the microphone to be open for questions from audience members. Concerns raised by students included the addition of extended/weekend hours due to busy schedules, the possibility of card access, safety and alternative opportunities.
“Moving forward, I would like to see continued discussion,” Judds said. “In order to see changes implemented, open discussion and positive relationships must be maintained.”
The goal of Student Senate was for this Field Access Forum to be a conversation starter between students and administration. Smith and Muller have offered to further discuss student concerns through an appointment arranged by email.
