The Concordia softball team played a doubleheader against Mount Marty on Saturday, April 22, at Plum Creek Park. They split the series, winning game one 7-4 and losing a close game two 4-2.
Between games the Bulldog seniors on the team were honored. The group included Caitlyn McGarvie, Sydney Schildt, Alexis Tachovsky, and Jerzi Rowe. The group was given graduation cords during the recognition.
The Bulldogs gave up two runs to the Lancers in the first inning, but in the bottom of the second the team struck for five runs of their own. The team was able to add two runs in the fourth and held on to defeat Mount Marty 7-4.
Sophomore Hanna Bowers went 3-3 at the dish scoring a pair of runs and knocking in two runs. Batting in the two hole Sophomore Aubrey Bruning went 3-4 also tallying two runs batted in, both of which came on singles to left field.
In game two Rowe got her senior day moment starting in the pitching circle. She pitched three innings, giving up only two earned runs, and struck out three Lancers. The Bulldogs found themselves trailing 3-1 from the third inning on. In the seventh each team scored a run and the game ended 4-2 in favor of the Lancers.
McGarvie took time after the game to talk about her experience during her time at Concordia while being part of the softball team. She also talked about the impact of the Bulldogs new head coach Brock Culler.
She said, “The program has helped me become a better person. Each and every day Coach Culler has pushed us to become better people. He wants us to be great athletes, but even better people. Overall it was a great day. I got to celebrate my teammates and myself with a great group of girls.”
The Bulldogs are now 14-27 overall on the season and 3-15 against Great Plains Athletic Conference opponents. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 25, when they travel to Omaha to play a doubleheader against the College of Saint Mary at three and five pm.
