Serving Coffee for the Glory of God
by Valery Rostek
Beloved by most everyone on campus, 10:31 Coffee in Janzow has established itself as a staple of Concordia life.
The coffee shop gets its unique name from 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 10:31 recognizes that coffee is necessary for many college students to function on a day to day basis, and joyfully serves up every cup.
“The biggest purpose for 10:31 Coffee is to serve CUNE for the glory of God,” senior and 10:31 manager Grace Lozier said.
Even though the small shop seems like it has been there forever, it opened not even a decade ago in April of 2008. According to Lozier, for the first two years of its life 10:31 was located in Link Library, just beyond the southern entrance in the atrium. It then moved to where Student Services is currently. Finally, 10:31 moved to its current, familiar location relatively soon after the first move, during the 2011-2012 school year.
Over the past nine years, the menu has understandably undergone significant change. Up until 2013, the choice of food was rather basic. That year brought on the desire for a menu overhaul, involving
student surveys, taste tests and research to see what Concordia really wanted from their coffee shop. While 10:31 ended up with a fully fleshed-out menu, the world of modern coffee doesn’t slow down.
“We try to continually add new things to keep up with trends. For the coming year, we’ve added a granite machine,” Lozier said. This device will produce coffee and non-coffee-based slushies.
10:31 also offers healthy on-the-go snacks and popular choices such as their cold brew and blackberry and lavender syrups. In the future, new products can be found under the Founders’ Favorites.
Lozier began managing 10:31 her freshman year in 2014, but she wasn’t alone. 10:31 is completely student run.
“We are the only business at CUNE that is solely run by the students and for the students,” Lozier said. “Every single person that works for 10:31 Coffee is a CUNE student, which is unique.”
This means a management team, along with a faculty adviser, takes the place of a single manager. Mallory Parrish and Annie Schmidt currently manage with Lozier. As Parrish and Lozier are both seniors, the coffee shop is currently looking for manager-in-training for this semester. Managers for 10:31 must have a major or minor in business, and be ready to commit at least 10-15 hours per week. Interested students can contact Parish, Lozier or faculty advisor Dr. Curt Beck, or apply beginning in October.
“10:31 is … an amazing opportunity to learn how to operate a real business,” Beck said..“The managers are business students, and they have to make the actual day to day decisions regarding personnel,
operations, marketing, finance and ethics. This is much more than a classroom simulation, it is an opportunity for Concordia business students to gain valuable experience while earning a business degree.”
