Home Sports No. 9 Women’s Basketball Holds Off No. 6 Dakota Wesleyan

In a top ten GPAC match up on Jan. 16, the No. 9 Concordia women’s basketball team came out on top over the visiting No. 6 Dakota Wesleyan Tigers 81-69. The Bulldogs now stand at a 14-4 overall and 9-4 in the GPAC.

The first quarter started slow with over two minutes of scoreless play from Walz Arena. Both teams picked up the pace, and at the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs led 22-20.

The Bulldogs began to edge out Dakota Wesleyan and continued an offensive run, making the score 28-20. With sharp shooting from behind the 3-point line, Concordia gained its first double-digit lead 36-25 over halfway through the second quarter. At the half, Concordia led 44-31 with 21 of the points coming from behind the 3-point arc.

The Tigers fought back after the halftime break, but Concordia weathered the storm and sophomore Sydney Feller put an end to the Tiger’s offensive show. With one period left to play, the Bulldogs led 63-47.

The Bulldogs finished the game with a continued 3-point show. Despite short offensive bursts from the Tigers, Concordia earned an 81-69 win.

The Bulldogs maintained a balanced scoring effort and had five players reach double figures. Freshman Quinn Wragge led with 16 points, Feller contributed 14 points while sophomore Mary Janovich scored 13 points. Senior Becky Mueller and junior Erin Vieselmeyer both netted 10 points.

Concordia will continue its season at 6 p.m. on Jan. 20 in Walz Arena against GPAC foe Hastings College.
