No. 2 Morningside Wins Top-25 Clash with No. 12 Women’s Basketball
by Jacy Johnston
A top 25 matchup took place on Saturday, Feb. 6 between the No. 12 Concordia Bulldogs and the No. 2 Morningside Mustangs. The Mustangs were too much for the Bulldogs to handle, and Concordia tallied a 79-65 loss. The Bulldogs moved to 19-7 overall and 11-7 in the GPAC.
The Bulldogs started the game timidly and fell behind 13-3 five minutes into the game. After a timeout, the Bulldogs quickly fought back with a 10-5 run to end the first quarter down 13-18.
The second quarter tipped in favor of the Mustangs too, but junior Shelby Quinn connected on two 3-pointers to keep the score close. At the half, the Mustangs controlled the score 37-28.
Morningside came out with the stronger momentum in the third quarter and pumped up its lead to 58-34 with 3:34 left in the quarter. After the third quarter, the Bulldogs trailed 63-48.
During the last quarter, the Bulldogs worked to cut the deficit. Freshman Quinn Wragge started off the quarter by closing the gap to 11 points. However, the Mustangs were too much for the Bulldogs and finished with the win.
Wragge had a game high and career high 29 points in the contest and shot 13 for 16 from the field. Wragge was the only Bulldog with a hot hand as Concordia shot only 15 percent from behind the 3-point arc. Quinn also proved a bright spot tallying 16 points off of 10-10 shooting from the foul line.
The Bulldogs will continue their season with a three-game GPAC home stand starting at 6 p.m. Feb. 10 against Midland University.
