by Garret Suchanek
Wednesday night the No. 10 Concordia women’s basketball team survived an upset-minded Midland University team with a score of 59-57. An impressive third quarter allowed the Bulldogs to build a big enough lead to hold off a late fourth-quarter surge from the Warriors.
Concordia (12-3, 7-3) got off to a slow start and trailed all of the first half. The Warriors held as much as an eight-point advantage in the first quarter, but that lead slowly dissolved. The Bulldogs ended the second quarter on a 7-2 run to go into halftime trailing 24-22.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs seemed to have found their rhythm as they scorched the nets for 23 points after scoring 22 points in the first half. Concordia held a 45-36 lead going into the final quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs continued to extend their lead and held a 54-40 lead. However, from that point on, the Warriors dug their heels in and started to fight back.
With 3:48 left in the game, the Warriors trailed by 12, 56-44. A combination of timely buckets and defensive stops closed the gap to six with under a minute to play. Midland outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 in the final 40 seconds, but Concordia held on for the 59-57 win.
Concordia had three scorers in double figures. Sophomore Brenleigh Daum and freshmen Quinn Wragge each tallied 14 points, while senior Becky Mueller chipped in 10 points.
The Bulldogs will hit the road again for a matchup with Northwestern College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.
