Home Sports No. 10 Briar Cliff Runs Away From No. 13 CU Women’s Basketball

by Jacy Johnston

The No. 13 Concordia women’s basketball team finished out its regular season at Briar Cliff University on Saturday, Feb. 20. The Bulldogs lost the contest 75-55 to No. 10 Briar Cliff, finishing the regular season with a 22-8 record and a 14-8 conference record.

The Bulldogs game started slow with lots of missed shots, tallying only 11 points in the first quarter. The sluggish shot percentage continued, and both teams only tallied single digits in the second quarter. Briar Cliff still outscored Concordia 9-7 to extend their halftime lead to 27-18.

Concordia’s 24 turnovers began to affect the Bulldogs’ ability to stay with Briar Cliff in the third quarter. Briar Cliff had an offensive burst to net 33 points in the third quarter, compared to the Bulldogs’ 17. Concordia earned its first offensive win in the fourth quarter with a 20-15 advantage, but the previous deficits were too much to overcome.

Freshman Quinn Wragge led the Bulldogs in the contest with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Wragge was the only player in double figures for Concordia.

With the loss, the Bulldogs claimed the fifth seed for the GPAC tournament and will have a rematch against fourth-seeded Briar Cliff in the quarterfinals of the GPAC tournament. Concordia will travel to Sioux City, Iowa, on Wednesday, Feb. 24 to face the Chargers.
