Professor and assistant women’s basketball coach Marty Kohlwey has resigned after 18 years as part of the Concordia faculty.

“It was super hard, probably the most difficult decision I’ve ever made, because I love it here,” Kohlwey said. “I love what I do.”

Kohlwey’s experience at Concordia began as a student, when he earned his undergraduate with a major in secondary education theology and PE coaching and played on the men’s basketball team. He graduated in 1983 and received his Masters from Concordia in 1998 in family life education and ministry.

Since becoming part of the faculty, Kohlwey has served as both coach and professor. From 1999 to 2006, he was an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team and worked as an assistant coach for the women’s team during the 2015-16 season.

In his time at Concordia, Kohlwey has taught classes including Freshman Year Experience, Methods in Secondary Religion, Lifespan Development, Introduction to Psychology, Sexuality and the Family, Ministry in a Changing World, and History and Literature of the Old Testament. Kohlwey also served as the director of student life for five years.

“I’ve had a unique experience here, because most people come as a coach. Others come as a faculty member intentionally to teach. Others maybe just work in the staff area like in student life. I’ve been all over the place, and I’ve really enjoyed the variety,” Kohlwey said.

Kohlwey has enjoyed the small-town, Christian atmosphere of both the school and community.

“This place really spoils you,” Kohlwey said. “Being able to talk about God with your students and with your colleagues openly and in a very relational way is awesome.”

Kohlwey will be moving to Parker, Colorado, with his wife.  He is looking forward to being close to his daughter and grandchildren and getting back to teaching religion. His new position will be Director of Campus Ministries and the senior class religion teacher at Parker Lutheran High School.

“I really love to teach the Bible, and that’s my first passion. I was able to do some of that in my classes here, but I really look forward to concentrating on that again and being able to mentor staff there and work with parents and family ministry at the high school.”
