Get to Know a Graduate Assistant: Tara Lujan
by Jordan McCoy
Tara Lujan plays a unique role as a graduate assistant at Concordia. Instead of planning practices and coaching players, it is her job to keep the community informed about each Concordia sports team’s players and successes as the assistant to Director of Athletic Communications Jake Knabel.
Lujan was born and raised in Long Beach, California. She attended California State University, Long Beach for her first year of college. However, after attending a college that was just five minutes from her house, Lujan decided she wanted to move to Hawaii for school. She spent her last three years of school at Chaminade University of Honolulu, where she majored in marketing and communications.
Finding this job at Concordia actually came through Twitter. Lujan saw the position posted in a tweet and made the decision to apply. Since transferring to Chaminade, a school of about 2,400 undergraduate students, Lujan was certain that the small town life was for her and wanted to select a graduate school where she would fit in.
“Seward stole my heart,” Lujan said. “Concordia is filled with amazing people, and the small-school environment allows me to get to know a lot of them.”
Lujan does work behind the scenes to ensure the athletic’s website is up to date, home game programs are made and player profiles are correct.
Although she is unsure about what steps she wants to take next, Lujan knows one thing for sure.
“I want to be my own boss, so I plan on starting my own business,” Lujan said.
Lujan is still in her first year as a graduate assistant and has one more year at Concordia.
