by Garrett Suchanek
On Tuesday night the Concordia softball team took the field for a doubleheader with GPAC foe Hastings College at Plum Creek Park and successfully swept the Broncos with a pair of walk-offs by final scores of 11-10 and 5-4.
Concordia improved to 20-7 overall and 5-3 in GPAC with the two wins.
In game one, Hastings jumped out to a quick lead by plating four runs in the top of the first inning, but Concordia responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the third inning to gain a one-run lead, but the Broncos tied the game in the next inning.
Concordia had to come back from another deficit after giving up four runs in the sixth inning. After tying the game in bottom of the seventh inning, the game went into extras. All it took was one extra inning to claim a win as junior Diana Mendoza slapped the game-winning hit to left field.
In game two, the Bulldogs were in the same position as game one. After trailing going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Concordia found a way to plate two runs to earn a 5-4 victory. Sophomore Michaela Woodward tied the game with a RBI double and put the winning run on third base with no one out. Two batters later, freshman Maddie Fousek pinch hit and delivered the game-winning hit in a walk-off fashion.
Concordia will take a step outside of conference play to face Peru State College tomorrow in Hastings. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
