The Concordia soccer teams faced the Morningside University Mustangs Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa. The women lost their game 2-1 and the men tied 2-2.
The Concordia women faced a tough, physical Morningside team. The clock stopped for an extended period of time twice for Bulldog injuries, one from a ball to the face resulting in a nosebleed and another from a hard fall and a knee injury.
Freshman Savannah Andrews scored the one goal for Concordia in the seventh minute of the game in an 18-yard shot that went right past Morningside’s goalie. However, the Mustang defense repelled any further Bulldog attempts at scoring.
The Concordia defense managed to hold off Morningside’s attacks till the second half where they managed to score two goals within 15 minutes of each other. The Bulldog women gave their all, but were overwhelmed by the second wind the Mustangs received after their first goal.
The Concordia men faced a similar situation. They scored their goals in the first half, but allowed a Morningside comeback in the second half and were unable to respond. Senior Dominic Abel-Ahad scored the first goal of the night in the third minute of the game, setting an optimistic tone for the game. Senior Daniel Campbell scored the second goal of the night in the 38th minute.
The women are now 7-2-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The men are 9-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the GPAC. Both teams play again on Oct. 8 in Seward against University of Jamestown. The women play first at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 8 p.m.
