by Jordan McCoy

On Saturday night, Oct. 22, the Concordia Bulldogs came out with a 2-1 overtime victory against Briar Cliff (8-8, 2-6 GPAC). The Bulldogs honored the seniors, including defender Andrew Mussell, midfielder Dan Stephens, goalkeeper Mark Horsburgh, midfielder Carlos Acosta, forward Ray Villegas and forward Marcelo Hernandez to thank them for their many efforts throughout their careers.

Concordia started strong in the first half with a goal from junior team captain and forward Micah Lehenbauer in the 13th minute. This was Lehenbauer’s seventh goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, the Chargers responded with a goal to tie the game, 1-1.

The second half remained scoreless, with each team taking eight shots. The game winner came 24 seconds into the first overtime when the Chargers fouled in the penalty box, which gave Marcelo Hernandez the opportunity to put the goal away and win the game. Overall, the Bulldogs outshot the Chargers 22-15. Hernandez led the team with six shots, with four on goal.

The Bulldogs have two regular season games left. They will travel to Crete to face Doane College (7-6-1, 4-3 GPAC) on the night of Wednesday, Oct. 26.  Currently, the Bulldogs are in third place overall in the GPAC. They will be able to host the first round of the GPAC tournament as long as they remain a top four team. Concordia is now 8-5-1, 5-2 in conference play.
