Concordia’s men’s basketball team defeated the Dordt College (Iowa) Defenders 72-69 at Wednesday night’s game.
After Dordt rose to a 9-0 lead in the first half, Concordia worked hard to bring the score to 10-9.
Starters for the game included junior guard Brevin Sloup (#3), freshman guard Carter Kent (#5), junior guard/forward Tanner Shuck (#21), freshman guard Justin Wiersema (#10) and junior forward Chuol Biel (#30).
The game’s close scores continued throughout the first part of the game, with the teams tied 31-31 at halftime.
The Bulldogs took their lead early in the second half and increased it to six points with a score of 45-39 midway through the second half.
Dordt attempted to recover from the deficit and reduced the Bulldogs’ lead to five points, but Sloup scored again, increasing Concordia’s lead and giving him 20 points for the game.
The scoring continued until there were 9.1 seconds left in the game, and the Bulldogs led 72-69. Despite Dordt’s attempts to get more points in before the buzzer, Concordia was able to hold them off and keep the score stationary as the timer ran out.
Lead scorers for the game were Sloup with 22 points, Wiersema with 13 points and sophomore forward Ryan Holt (#32) with 10 points.
The Bulldogs will continue their 14-12 season Saturday, Feb. 2 against the Northwestern College Raiders in Orange City, Iowa.
